Cyberbullying Prevention for Teens

These days teens communicate almost exclusively on line which is where cyberbullying occurs.

E-mailing and on line chatting and social media are an everyday occurrence. Most teens have seen some forms of cyberbullying.

Talk to your Teen about Safe Internet Behaviour

Cyberbullying Prevention for TeensTalking to your teen about safe Internet behaviour and the risks of the Internet is the best prevention. Teens need to know they have to be careful about what they write and what they say.

It’s good policy to remind them never to give out personal information and never arrange a face to face meeting with anyone. As parents make your own rules about Internet usage.

Cyber Safety Rules for Teens

  • Tell your teen to keep their profile settings private so it is difficult for anyone to use their details and impersonate them.
  • Tell them to only add people they actually know as friends.
  • If they are being bullied by someone on line, block them from contacting your child and report them to the website administrator.
  • Keep your child’s log-in details private, use different user names.
  • Let them know to only send pictures or personal information to people they know and trust.
  • Tell them to log out and stop messaging if they feel they are being harassed.

Cyberbullying isn’t always anonymous, the bully can be traced on line. It’s important never to take revenge on a cyberbully. As a parent you can help your child report cyberbullying to Internet Service Providers or website moderators. They may be able to block, delete or ban the cyberbully.
