Cyberbullying Facts

Cyberbullying is a relatively unknown world until you find your child or a friend of theirs has been a victim. The American Academy of Paediatrics has called cyberbullying “the most common on line risk for teens”.

Cyberbullying Statistics

In 2013 a Canadian study found 23% of middle-schoolers surveyed had been bullied by e-mail.

  • 88% of teens that use social media regularly say they have witnessed someone being mean or cruel on a social media site and 12% say they witness this behaviour regularly.
  • Fully 41% did not know the identity of the perpetrators. Identifying who has done the bullying can be difficult.
  • European Union Risk Behaviour Surveillance Survey finds that 15% of high school students (grades 9-12) were electronically bullied in the past year.
  • Even more disturbing is teens seem unaware how upsetting their bullying may be.
  • The national Crime Prevention Cyberbullying Report showed that¬†81% of youth cyberbully because they think it is funny and only 11 % of teens talk to parents about cyberbullying.
  • Over 70% of teens said the most effective way to stop cyberbullying was to block the messages.

Negative Effects of Cyberbullying

Studies have shown that cyberbullying can have negative affects on kids self-esteem. They can respond with a variety of emotions such as retaliating, being scared, frustrated, angry, and depressed. Studies have shown cyberbullying can be more harmful than traditional bullying because there is no escaping it.

One of the most damaging effects is that a victim begins to avoid friends and activities, often the very intention of the cyberbully.

Warning Signs of Cyberbullying

  • Change in mood
  • Reluctant to socialize
  • Upset after using the computer
  • Anxious or upset after reading a text message

Unfortunately the facts show cyberbullying is here to stay.
