Grades 4 to 6 are the beginning of more memory work and simple concept comprehension. Grammar, spelling and math all involve memorization,, fine motor skills and following specific rules. Homework Help For Parents Of Grades 4-6One homework study showed when parents help sixth graders with homework they believe they do better in school regardless of how they feel working with parents. Showing an interest, encouraging your child and even sitting down to help them when they need it makes them feel better about learning.

Explain the purpose of the homework

At this age kids need to understand the why of learning and school. Explain why they need to finish an assignment, have daily reading time or practice a task till they remember it. Explaining the purpose of what they are learning gives logic to homework and gives them a sense of purpose.

Set short study times with breaks

Study times can be a little longer with breaks inbetween. You want your child to focus. If they are too restless give them a longer active timed break but then back to homework.

Decide on the best time for homework

You may have a child who needs fresh air and activity before they can sit down and concentrate or you may have a child who is in school mode when they come home. Look at the child’s energy levels and decide the best time for homework for them.

Be available but give them space

Homework is developing independence and this age group needs a mix of both. Giving them their space to work independently but being close enough to help or explain gives your child the learning support they need at home.

Start some organizational skills

At this age kids get projects. Using a calendar and help your child break down a bigger project into smaller doable steps to take the stress out of deadlines and last minute scrambles. Writing down one thing they need to do the next day helps with routine. Organizing notebooks and packing their backpack gives a sense of completion to homework done.
