Help Your Kids Remember Vocabulary Words

A developed vocabulary makes it easier for kids to learn quickly and express themselves better. Research has shown that kids need to hear new words, use new words and hear new words in context to remember vocabulary.

Here are five ways to use new vocabulary everyday at home.

5 Ways to Help Kids Remember Vocabulary WordsPay attention to your kids vocabulary

Use new words regularly. Add new words to daily conversation. Use synonyms, say delicious, yummy and scrumptious to describe the same thing.

Correct mistakes positively and gently by repeating what they said correctly.

Look at weekly spelling lists and use those words at home. It takes a lot of repetition to have a new word move into long term memory.

Raise your kid’s word consciousness

This means drawing attention and creating interest around words. This can be done through crosswords, games, flashcards, songs and stories.

Teach conceptually related words

Teaching words in groups and making connections is easier than teaching one word at a time. If you’re reading a book about farms, teach all the farm words. If your are reading a book about animals teach a group of animal words.

Night time story time

Use story time to expand your kids vocabulary naturally. Have them retell the story and prompt them to use one or two new words from the story. Ask questions using new words.

Reading children’s stories out loud that are slightly above their level introduces the meaning of new vocabulary in context with correct pronunciation.

Play vocabulary games

Vocabulary games are an excellent way to repeat and learn words in fun ways.

Improving your kids vocabulary can be fun with word games, books and vocabulary builders.
